XtreemOS summer school, Günzburg - Germany, July 5-9, 2010
XtreemOS is a Linux-based operating systems that includes Grid functionalities. It is characterised by properties such as transparency, hiding the complexity of the underlying distributed infrastructure; scalability, designed to support thousands of nodes and users; and dependability, providing reliability, highly availability and security.
The XtreemOS Summer School will include lectures on modern distributed paradigms such as Grid computing, Cloud computing, and network-centric operating systems. The Summer School will combine lectures from research leaders shaping the future of distributed systems and world leaders in deploying and exploiting distributed infrastructures. Hands-on laboratory exercises and practical sessions using XtreemOS will give participants experience on using modern distributed systems.
Aims
The aims of the XtreemOS Summer School are:
* To introduce participants to emergent computing paradigms such as Grid computing and Cloud computing
* To provide lectures and practical courses on novel techniques to achieve scalability, highly availability and security in distributed systems
* To present Grid applications in the domains of E-science and business.
* To provide a forum for participants to discuss your research work and share experience with experience researchers.
Target audience
The school is open to postgraduate level students (MSc, PhD) and young researchers (from technical industries, research laboratories, and academic environments) who have recently started (or are about to start) working on grid research projects.
Prospective students from computer science, computational science and application backgrounds will be encouraged to apply; Basic knowledge in distributed systems is the only prerequisite.
Grid newcomers and beginners are welcome, but people already involved in grid projects should also benefit from this school.
Technical programme (a programme will be soon available online)
The topics covered in the Summer School include:
* Introduction to Grids, Clouds, SOA and network-centric operating systems
* Grid programming interfaces
* VO Management and security
* Distributed data management
* Application execution management
* Availability and Scalability
* Grid Checkpointing
* XtreemOS cluster flavour
* How to port an application to XtreemOS
* XtreemOS deployment (permanent testbed)

Doctoral Symposium
There will be one afternoon dedicated to discuss research topics with the School participants. PhD and MSc students are encouraged to give short presentations about their work. There will be an award to the best presentation! (cfp in progress)
Poster session
The welcome reception will be combined with a poster session of research work of the school participants. Every school participant is encouraged to present a poster.
Venue
The XtreemOS Summer School will take place at Science Center Reisensburg Castle of Ulm University near the town of Günzburg, which is located about 40 km east of Ulm. The picturesque castle „Schloss Reisensburg“, dating back to the 14th Century and now owned by Ulm University, is situated on a hill close to the Danube River providing high-quality accommodation and conference facilities for seminar guests of Ulm University.
Practical Information
Students and post-docs, as well as scientist, interested to attend the XtreemOS Summer School 2010 are kindly invited to fill out the registration form that is now available on the XtreemOS project website (registration through PDF form only).
The deadline for registration is June 28, 2010 and the early registration fee is available till May 31, 2010.
The fee for the school is 390€ and includes accommodation in standard single room between Monday July 5 and Friday July 9, breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee breaks and participation in social activities:
- Welcome reception on Monday 5th,
- Social Dinner on Thursday 8th,
- Optional: FIFA world cup semi-finals on TV (Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th),
- Optional: guided tour in Ulm on Friday 9th afternoon.
The rooms have their own bathroom with shower. There is free Internet via WLAN within the castle and in the rooms.
Payment can be made either by credit card or bank transfer.
The participants are expected to plan their arrival on the Monday morning, July 5th, 2010, and their departure on Friday afternoon, July 9th, 2010. Lunch on Monday will be provided at 12:30 GMT.
