9th IIR Conference on Phase-Change Materials and Slurries for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

… the premier world gathering of stakeholders and experts in ice slurries, phase-change slurries and phase-change materials …

29 September 2010 - 1 October 2010
Bulgaria
CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR, http://www.iifiir.org(opens in new window)) is the only independent intergovernmental organisation which promotes knowledge of refrigeration and various associated technologies, indispensable for human life, in a science-based, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner. The present event forms part of a conference series conducted regularly by the IIR’s Working Party on Phase-Change Materials and Slurries for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (formerly known as Working Party on Ice Slurries).

Phase-Change Materials (PCMs) are capable of releasing or absorbing large amounts of latent heat when solidifying or melting at a certain temperature or temperature range, thereby serving a number of useful engineering applications related to efficient storage and transport of thermal energy, heat transfer enhancement, process optimisation, etc. PCM microcapsules added to a liquid form a two-phase mixture named ‘Phase-Change Slurry’ which can be pumped. Ice Slurries are most widespread amongst all known phase-change slurries and represent Non-Newtonian fluids with high energy potential due to their freezing enthalpies. Moreover, the ice-slurry phase change dramatically improves heat transfer processes and provides uniform temperature distributions within the slurry volume. A number of emerging and innovative PCM and slurry-based technologies substantially advance paramount industrial areas, such as refrigeration, air conditioning, renewable heating and cooling, thermal energy storage, process engineering, etc.

The 9th IIR Conference on PCM and Slurries for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (http://www.iceslurry.org(opens in new window)) is designed to provide an open international forum where academics and stakeholders from across Europe and around the world will present and discuss latest research findings, developments and trends in the concerned field. The event gives scientists and practitioners an opportunity to meet colleagues and share ideas that shape PCM research and engineering for years to come.

Conference participants will also enjoy the renowned Bulgarian hospitality, ancient culture, traditions and historical heritage. As you can see, there are many reasons why you should attend in order to present your work or product, meet key professionals or find international partners for your project initiatives.

The organisers look forward to welcoming you in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria.

SCOPE AND TOPICS

The thematic scope of this conference encompasses the following key topics:

- Thermophysical and rheological properties of Phase-Change Materials (PCMs) and Slurries
- Transport phenomena and time-dependent behaviour of PCMs and Slurries – heat, mass and momentum transfer
- Novel and optimised PCMs and Slurries for refrigeration and air conditioning applications
- Innovative and improved equipment and logistics for generation, handling, distribution and employment of PCMs and Slurries
- Renewable heating and cooling by using PCMs and Slurries
- Thermal energy storage and energy savings via PCMs and Slurries
- Industrial and building applications of PCMs and Slurries:
• Air conditioning and cold supply for residential, office and industrial buildings
• Fast chilling and freezing of foods in Phase-Change Slurries
• Application of PCMs and Slurries throughout the cold chain for foods and beverages (i.e. during refrigerated processing, warehousing, transport, retail and household handling of chilled and frozen commodities)
• Monitoring, automation and control of refrigeration systems for production and use of PCMs and Slurries
- Sustainability impact of refrigeration and air conditioning technologies involving PCMs and Slurries (environmental, energy, socio-economic and life cycle assessments)
