Conference called "Loss of the Night" on the 14th of July, Brussels, Belgium

ArtiĞficial light has positive connotations of security, wealth and modernity. Today, an increasing part of the Earth‘s surface is illuminated at night, leading to changes in the quantity and quality of light. While new lighting technologies will play a critical role in in a more energy-efficient Europe, these must be coupled with a better understanding of its impacts to different areas of life.

14 July 2010

The "Verlust der Nacht" ('Loss of the Night') consortium is addressing the impact of artiĞficial light to culture, society, health, economy and the environment in a holistic approach. The consortium combines the research and technology expertise of seven institutes of the Leibniz Association, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, the Freie Universität Berlin and the Technische Universität Berlin. While "Verlust der Nacht" marks an important milestone in trans-disciplinary research, a broader, European-scale outlook is the logical next step.

We cordially invite you to participate in the "Loss of the Night" event which is held on July 14 at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences to introduce the project and discuss future research priorities.
