The EMBO Meeting 2010, Barcelona, Spain

The EMBO Meeting 2010 will take place from the 4th to the 7th of September in Barcelona, Spain.

4 September 2010 - 7 September 2010
Austria
The theme of this year's meeting will be on ‘molecular life sciences '. Reflecting an emphasis on functional and system-level insights, three plenary lecture sessions will be devoted to modern evolutionary biology, to molecular developmental biology and to the rapidly developing fields related to systems biology, such as network biology, functional genomics and synthetic biology.
A rich selection of topics will be addressed in 21 workshops, juxtaposing classical with less classical fields of research. Thus, workshops focusing on central themes such as cell signaling and division, chromosomal organization, genome stability, cell differentiation and pluripotency, epigenetics and mechanisms of gene regulation will be complemented by a series of sessions that will explore the new frontiers in molecular biology. These will present research devoted to the analysis on the global genetic makeup of entire bacterial communities (metagenomics), the application of molecular and computational techniques for the engineering of human-designed biological objects (synthetic biology), and the investigation of the inner working of complex genetic and metabolic networks.

Keynote and special lecturers include:

Elizabeth Blackburn (Sunday 09:00 – 10:00)
2009 Nobel laureate
Roles of telomeres & telomerase in health & disease

Richard Losick (Saturday 18:15 – 19:00)
Stochasticity & cell fate

Frans de Waal (Sunday 18:00 – 19:00)
Prosocial primates: Empathy, fairness & cooperation

Plenary sessions focus on three topics:
Evolution of animal forms (Sunday)
Systems biology & functional genomics (Monday)
Signalling in development (Tuesday)

21 workshops & more than 700 posters present and discuss the latest research findings.

Special sessions include:
Science & Society (Sunday 19:00 – 20:30)
Albert Osterhaus & Barbara Bannister
How a virus becomes a global scare – Pandemics and the public health system

Women in Science (Monday 18:00 – 19:30)
Richard Haier
The Intelligent Brain: Does sex matter?

Wireless internet will be available throughout the conference venue, the Palau de Congressos.
