Feeding the Future Generation - The NUTRIMENTHE Open Forum

"Does what we feed our children influence their behaviour and intelligence?"

The NUTRIMENTHE Project - Open Forum will be held on the 6th October 2010 at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel in York, UK.

6 October 2010 - 6 October 2010
Austria
Evidence is accumulating to show that pre and post natal nutrition pre-programme long term health, well being and mental performance. Studies exist on the potential beneficial effects of long chain-polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) and single or multinutrient supplementation on the long-term mental performance of infants and children. However, there is still a lack of clarity and consensus on their role.

NUTRIMENTHE is a five-year project part-funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme that is addressing the following:

Does taking folic acid during pregnancy affect foetal brain development and behaviour in children?
How fish, and specific fatty acids, taken during pregnancy affect children’s behaviour
Does supplementation of nursery-age children with B-vitamins affect their cognitive development?
How protein intake (breast milk versus formula milk) during infancy affects later mental performance.
Nature versus nurture. Does our genetic make-up affect how we process certain nutrients?
Understanding how parents and teachers perceive that food affects mental performance of children.
Can the long-term economic impact of improving children’s mental performance be assessed? The event is targeted to an audience of key stakeholders including academia, health professionals, policy makers, consumers and industry representatives.
