European Parliament Seminar on Collaboration Space-based International Global Maritime Awareness (C-SIGMA) in Brussels - Belgium

The purpose of the seminar will be to provide input for the C-SIGMA roadmap and discuss possible forms of cooperation between EU and US in Maritime awareness. A C-SIGMA high level meeting is planned in early 2011 which will be sponsored by the European Space Agency and the European Commission, as well as the US Departments of State, Defence, Transportation, Commerce, and Homeland Security to look at the US-EU collaboration. The seminar will preview the 2011 meeting.
The interdepartmental/interagency participants will develop a strategy for the development of a multi-national architecture that integrates data collected by civil and commercial space systems from a number of nations in support of global maritime awareness. The study team will also develop a draft road map as to how to achieve this strategy and high-level system architecture.
The SIGMA project is relevant to a number of EU Policies. Its applications address security and defence issues such as earth observations, climate change research, disaster mitigation and relief; space surveillance for debris monitoring and awareness as well as transport policy, especially maritime transport and more generally research and innovation policy.
