European Parliament Hearing on South Africa cooperation with EU's Innovation Union in Brussels - Belgium

On the 17 November 2010 the European Parliament will hold a hearing entitled “Why and how to strengthen cooperation with a strategic partner within the context of Innovation Union”. Mr. Giles Chichester, MEP, vice chair of Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament will sponsor the Hearing.

This review includes a focus on how to strengthen the global dimension of the European Research Area, or within the language of the Innovation Union Communication, additionally an interrogation of how to leverage the EU’s S&T policies externally will be examined.

The hearing will consist of a series of short presentations of case studies of existing S&T collaborations between South Africa and the EU. Presentations by South African and European experts will each address one of the core elements of the Innovation Union’s vision for international cooperation indentified.

Following these presentations, a panel of senior South African and European officials will evaluate the impact of South Africa’s S&T cooperation with the EU. They will not only measure against the objectives of Innovation Union but also how the partnership supports the implementation of South Africa’s Ten Year Innovation Plan.

They will also offer suggestions of how cooperation can be improved, notably within the context of the preparation of the successor instrument to FP7.
