European Brain Awareness Week (15-21 March 1999) is playing host to hundreds of events throughout Europe, including a variety of art-related events in an attempt to interpret one of the most important areas of modern science creatively.

Artists, including sufferers of brain disorders, and scientists will unite to hold exhibitions, debates and workshops which will express brain disorders and brain research in an imaginative and enjoyable form.

European Brain Awareness Week is a week of activities co-ordinated by The European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB). Headed by Chief Executive Professor Colin Blakemore, EDAB is a non-profit organisation that exists to raise the profile of brain research.

Professor Blakemore said: "Our creativity is determined by our brain, so it's great to see so many collaborative efforts between the neurosciences and the arts. Hopefully this will raise awareness of brain disorders and help to dispel the concept of two cultures".

Countries participating this year will be Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

"The level of participation throughout Europe is amazing and demonstrates how serious a problem disorders of the brain are," said Professor Blakemore.

"This final year of the Decade of the Brain is a good time to reflect on the advances in brain research this century and look forward to progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders in the next. European Brain Week provides the ideal forum to do just that."
