9 December 2010 - 10 December 2010
Austria
A high level conference on “Ethics and Governance of Biometrics and Identification Technologies” will take place at the Radisson Blu EU Hotel in Brussels on 9 & 10 December 2010. Senior government speakers will address the Conference, including Mr. Alexander Alvaro, MEP & ALDE Coordinator of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and Mr. Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor. Other high level speakers from policy, academia, industry and user groups will also address the conference.

The conference, chaired by the European Biometrics Forum, Ireland, and the Centre for Science, Society and Citizenship, Italy, will be held in the framework of the RISE (Rising Pan‐European and International Awareness of Biometrics and Security Ethics, and HIDE (Homeland Security, Biometric Identification and Personal Detection Ethics, projects, both funded in the scope of European Commission FP7 - Science in Society. In particular, this joint event is regarded as the RISE multi-stakeholder conference and the final conference of the HIDE project.

RISE and HIDE’s mission is to provide an open, international forum to discuss ethical, privacy and social issues raised by biometrics and security technologies, and to set up a permanent platform devoted to these concerns. Principally, the RISE project aims to deepen, enlarge and ensure continuity of international dialogue already initiated by the international conferences on ethics and biometrics organized by the EC DG Research and the US DHS Privacy Office respectively in Brussels and Washington DC in 2005 and 2006.

Building on the three previous RISE stakeholder workshops, RISE is convening this conference to advance and further promote stakeholder involvement - including regulators, responsible agencies, lawmaking bodies, industry, third party privacy solutions providers and consumer representatives ‐ in setting technology security policy in Europe. During the conference, a special session devoted to HIDE will summarize the project’s results and will seek endorsement for the permanent platform, to ensure engagement with ethical and policy issues relating to biometrics and personal detection technologies continues beyond the duration of the project.

Conference date : 9 & 10 December 2010
