CONCERTO FINAL FORUM in Brussels, Belgium

A major forum for local decision makers and stake-holders will be held on the 6th- 7th of December in Brussels, Belgium. The conference will be an effort to show-case the achievements of the CONCERTO initiative in its entirety, after more than 5 years of concerted action.

6 December 2010 - 7 December 2010
Belgium
CONCERTO commenced in 2005 as part of the European Commission’s Sixth Research Framework Programme. The CONCERTO concept quickly took hold, and five years later 58 cities in 23 countries across Europe are participating and over 70 associated communities benefit from knowledge and policy recommendations.

The initiative has proven that the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures in building is both affordable and highly compatible with a high standard of living. Authorities that have striven to be ambitious under CONCERTO have regularly outperformed national standards.

Since 2005, the following has been achieved:

• The CONCERTO communities will achieve an estimated reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 310,000 tCO2/yr. The CONCERTO communities alone reduce the equivalent of total CO2 emissions of a ca 30,000 inhabitants town per year including CO2 emissions from transport, living, food, industry etc.

• Across the demonstration sites 1,830,000 m2 of buildings have been built or renovated

• Electricity use has been reduced by 1/5 and the quantity of renewable energy sources has increased. 150GWh of electricity and 250 GWh of heat are now produced via renewable sources each year.

• CONCERTO cities have shown that through innovative technologies and integrated approach, the built environment can cut its CO2 emissions by up to 50%.

The current CONCERTO activities comprise a population of approximately 5 million people with about 500,000 inhabitants directly or indirectly affected.

The Forum will feature a wide range of high-level speakers ranging from CONCERTO city mayors, well-known and prominent MEPs, and important figures from within the European Commission.

Key note-speakers include
• European Commissioner for Energy, Mr. Günther Oettinger
• Mr. Fabrizio Barbaso, Deputy Director-General DG ENERGY
• Mayors of Nantes Métropole, Hannover, Weilerbach and Torino
• MEPs Claude Turmes, Silvia Adriana Ticau and Angelika Niebler

Based on the CONCERTO experiences, the European Commission will launch its up-coming ‘Smart Cities’ Initiative.

The forum will be held on the 6th- 7th of December at the Thon hotel in Brussels. Participation is free of charge. For more information please contact the CONCERTO Plus team:
