The Council of Europe is organising the "International Conference on Ethical Issues arising from the Application of Biotechnology" in Ovieda, Spain, between 16 and 19 May 1999.

The objectives of the conference are to encourage public debate on and to identify ethical questions linked to the application of biotechnology from a multidisciplinary and multicultural point of view, using case studies.

Each intervention will be followed by a debate, and each participant will be able to send a written communication dealing with a subject included in the programme to the conference for distribution there.

The results of this conference will provide a basis for the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to decide on possible action in the field of biotechnology.
