Marie Curie NARNIA Early Stage Research Fellowship (NARNIA ESR-15)

Historic pottery in the Aegean. Materials and techniques, quantitative style analysis, full-scale reproduction.

1 February 2011 - 1 February 2011

The research focuses on the study of specific pottery types from 9th to 4th cent BC from major ceramic production centres i.e. Attica, Euboea, Corinth and the Cyclades with the aim to identify/introduce criteria of standardisation, both geographic and temporal, in pottery production in the Aegean.

Other topics of interest include style migration, division of labour, and manufacturing practices, all in relation to local availability of raw materials. The first stage of the work will be based on data from the archive of THETIS, collected during the past ten years in view of the reproduction of original artefacts for the Greek Archaeological Service. This 3yrs research work will provide training for the fellow at non-destructive ion beam analytical facilities and will lead to a PhD award.
