Great rivers need to be revitalized

The "Great Rivers 99" International Scientific and Industrial Forum, to be held at Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, between 25 and 28 May 1999, is supported by the European Union's TACIS Programme, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO and the Government of the Russian Federation.

The focus of the Forum is "Ecological Revitalization of Great River Basins: Experience and Problems" and it is dedicated to the issues of stable economic development and establishment of new types of international partnerships in resolution of global problems of environmental control.

The Forum will have various sessions, such as:

- Economy and ecology;
- Rational use and protection of great rivers´ natural resources;
- Environmental monitoring within the great river basins;
- Oil, gas, energy industry: problems and solutions.

In addition to an international seminar "Exchange of experience on the realization of the provisions of the UN/ECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Water Courses and International Lakes", there will be specialized exhibitions at the Forum.
