International Symposium "Optical solutions to biomedical problems" - Marseille, France

The European project CARS Explorer organises an international Symposium on “Optical solutions to biomedical problems” June 20th – 21st, 2011 at the Centre d’Immunologie Marseille-Luminy (CIML) in Marseille, France.

8 April 2011 - 21 June 2011
France
Combating diseases is strongly dependent on tools for their early diagnosis and prognosis. This is exemplified in cancer, where the earlier a tumour is detected, the better are the chances for the patient's recovery. By adding, subtracting, mixing and manipulating photons to explore molecular resonances inherent to molecules, non-linear optics (NLO) imaging technologies are challenging but promising for biomedical applications.

Today, this effective transfer of NLO to biomedicine needs to be considered as a multimodal source of information. This symposium will aim to sum up the work already accomplished and to highlight its potential within the frame of an emerging personalized medicine.

Session topics:

BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS: This session will illustrate the biological interest in conducting researches on new contrast imaging for medical diagnostics. Specific emphasis will be put on potential interest for personalized medicine applications.

FIBERS AND SOURCES: Technological development is frequently at the heart of scientific progress, and is clearly essential if scientific progress is to benefit society. The intention of this session is to provide a forum within which to gather a knowledge base of the current status of research in laser sources and optical fibres, and how they can be implemented in novel biomedical systems.

RAMAN-BASED TECHNOLOGIES: This session aims to highlight frontier research in the development and application of label-free and Raman-based methodologies for the detection, diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. The focus will be on novel imaging, endoscopy and spectroscopy tools based on Coherent Raman Scattering (CRS) microscopy.

OTHER TECHNOLOGIES: Among others, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), phase imaging, polarization imaging are powerful techniques to image the living world. The goal of this session is to provide some snap-shots on important imaging techniques that are complementary to point scanning conventional optical imaging.
