“ [..]Social Innovation can be defined as new responses to pressing social demands, which affect the process of social interactions. It is aimed at improving human well-being.” *

Why is a Social Innovation Conference necessary?
What does Social Innovation mean today?
How can research sustain Social Innovation?
What can the Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities contribute?

These are some of the topics which will be discussed during the International Scientific Conference “Chal-lenge Social Innovation - Innovating innovation by research – 100 years after Schumpeter” and during the NET4SOCIETY FP7 Networking event. The event will take place from 19th to 21st September at Vienna’s Techgate venue.

“Challenge Social Innovation” is an event co-organized by NET4SOCIETY (the Network of Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities National Contact Points) through the support of the European Commission, Social Sciences and Humanities Unit, the Centre for Social Innovation, Vienna and the Dortmund University of Technology.

Theoretical considerations, practical experience and empirical case studies pertaining to research in the field of Social Innovation will be presented and discussed by academics and policy makers.

The three-day event aims to:
• Advance scientific conceptualisation of social innovation and research on innovations for develop-ment that is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable
• Establish the notion of social innovation on a par with the traditional concept of innovation
• Facilitate an integrated concept of innovation, including the social, economic, cultural and techno-logical dimensions of innovation
• Initiate methodological design to include social innovations in large-scale surveys (such as the European Innovation Scoreboard, EIS)
• Promote FP7 SSH programme implementation
• Provide practical tools for engaging the Societal Challenges of SSH in FP7

What are the EU funding opportunities for SSH research?
A series of sessions will take place over three days, moving from policy discussion and debate to FP7 net-working and engagement . A specific networking and matchmaking session will be provided through the “NET4SOCIETY Challenge Social Innovation Networking event” which will take place on 21st September. European Commission representatives will provide information on the upcoming call for proposals FP7-SSH-2012, launching in summer 2011. SSH researchers and stakeholders (universities, research institutions, civil society organizations and SMEs) will have the opportunity to meet both potential coordinators and potential project partners in a structured networking environment.

This event will give you the unique opportunity to build consortia for the next
Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities call in FP7.

The NET4SOCIETY Networking event will especially focus on topics related to the general research fields of “Social Innovation“.
