10 May 2011 | Brussels: Final Conference of the European FITT Project on Improving ICT Technology Transfer in Europe

Innovation is at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Both the Innovation Union and the Digital Agenda emphasise the importance of ICT as a driving force for innovation and competitiveness – not only for the rapidly evolving, research-driven sector itself, but also for other sectors in Europe’s economy. Europe has no shortage of ICT innovations, but falls short in the commercialisation of promising inventions. Europe can – and must do – much better in the technology transfer process, in turning innovative ideas and resources into new products and services that create growth, jobs and social welfare. The final conference of the European FITT project “ICT INNOVATIONS: Research > Business > Society” brings together European stakeholders involved in ICT research, business and innovation policy in order to discuss current challenges, best practices and future scenarios of ICT technology transfer in Europe.

April 2011: The final conference of the European project FITT (Fostering Interregional Exchange in ICT Technology Transfer) “ICT INNOVATIONS: Research > Business > Society” will take place in Brussels at the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the EU (Rue Belliard 60 – 62, 1040 Brussels) on 10 May 2011. The FITT final conference aims to stimulate dialogues among European stakeholders involved in ICT research, technology transfer and innovation policy in order to jointly improve the transfer of Europe’s excellent ICT research results into marketable business opportunities.

The two panel sessions "From Ideas to Products: The Business Model Challenge" and "How FITT is Europe for the Innovation Challenge?" will discuss current challenges, best practices and future scenarios of ICT technology transfer in Europe:

- What are the bottlenecks that stop innovative ideas from reaching the market?
- How to create sustainable business models from ICT innovations?
- What can Structural Funds do to stimulate successful transfer in Europe?
- What is needed to turn the Innovation Union into reality?
- What is missing for making Europe a more rewarding place for innovation and for finally unleashing the Digital Revolution?

A panel discussion gathering policy, research and business experts around one table will sum up, reflect and resume the panel sessions. Finally, an evening event including a dinner buffet will offer the opportunity to exchange and network in a relaxed atmosphere.

Speakers of the FITT conference are: Ruut Louwers (INTERREG IVB NWE), Dr. Carolina Garcia Rizo (MIT), Rudi Broos (Alcatel-Lucent Bells Lab), Dr. Joachim Hafkesbrink (TII), Prof. Bruno van Pottelsberghe (ULB), Prof. Pieter Ballon (IBBT iLab.o) Prof. Thomas Baaken (Münster University of Applied Science), Prof. Bart Clarysse (ICBS London), Yannis Pierrakis (NESTA), Claude Gomez (Scilab Enterprises), Dr. Mario Cameron (CameronPartners), Alain Bravo (Supélec), David Moir (St. John’s Innovation Centre Cambridge), Dr. Anton Theuma (Paragon Europe), Nick De Mey (Board of Innovation), Wim De Waele (IBBT), Bruno Cornette (CRP Henri Tudor), Dr. Jürgen Jähnert (MFG Baden-Württemberg), Olivier De Cock (Flemish Agency for Innovation).
