Phytosfere '99, a conference on European advances in plant biotechnology research, will be held in Rome between 7 and 9 June 1999.

The conference will focus on the results from research in plant biotechnology, funded under the European Commission's (EC's) Fourth Framework Programme (FP4) for Research, Technological development and Demonstration (RTD), as well as research now beginning under the EC's Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for RTD.

Work from the following research project clusters will receive particular attention at the conference:

- Control of genes;
- Mapping and function;
- Development and architecture;
- Embryogenesis;
- Stress response;
- Metabolic pathways.

The event will include panel discussions, and information on how to put science into practice and start up a company.

Speakers at the conference will include top scientists in the field, representatives from major European companies, representatives from the EC's Directorate-General XII, and experts from venture-capital and finance organisations.

All the laboratories involved in FP4 research in this field are invited to present posters detailing their current work and achievements at the conference.
