The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), on behalf of the European Commission, is carrying out a project to investigate the process of transferring research results into standards.

The objectives of the project are to address how standards are currently realized from research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) work, what the existing barriers to this process are, and how this process may be improved in the future. The project is an interactive process in two stages:

- A questionnaire survey of all projects in SMT of the Fourth Framework Programme (FP4): An electronic version of the questionnaire is available on the web at:

URL: http://www.npl.co.uk/npl/express

- Two separate one day workshops, to be held at CEN in Brussels on the 5 and 6 May 1999.

Each workshop will allow a limited number (30-35) of participants the opportunity to discuss the barriers and to propose improvements in the process of realising standards from research.
