An international symposium "Regional policies in Europe - new opportunities, new challenges" at Graz, Austria, between 2 and 5 September 1999 is the prelude to a summer university, between 6 and 24 September 1999. This is designed as a training forum for the exchange of knowledge and information between European Union representatives, researchers and practitioners.

The symposium will deal with the past and the future of society in Europe's changing regions and will try to answer the question "Are regional policies solutions for regional challenges?"

The summer university will comprise the following three one-week modules:

- Preparing for EU-based regional development 2000-2006 (between 6 and 10 September 1999);
- Designing and implementing comprehensive regional policies (between 13 and 17 September 1999);
- Fostering interactions between regions (between 20 and 24 September 1999).
