More public health research for Europe

STEPS, an EU-funded Science-in-Society project, has called for greater collaboration between ministries of health, and with the European Union, in developing health research systems, and greater engagement with researchers and civil society organisations in setting priorities and programmes.

The STEPS Report Public Health Research - Europe's Future was launched on 5th October 2011 at the European Health Forum Gastein, the annual event for health and healthcare policy-makers, researchers and industry.

Professor Mark McCarthy, Coordinator of STEPS and Research Lead for the European Public Health Association, said, “Prevention and healthcare organisation contributes greatly to our health, yet only 5% of health research funds currently go to public health research. The STEPS Report calls to raise this proportion to 25%, and for far greater engagement with all stakeholders to promote European public health research and social innovation.”

The report is available at www.steps-ph.eu/Steps_Report
