Science Diplomacy with the Arab Peninsula Meeting in Brussels, Belgium
The purpose of the meeting is to identify an adequate format for scientific dialogue and cooperation between the Arab Peninsula and the EU within the context of the broader EU-GCC cooperation following the European Parliament Resolution of 24 March 2011 on “European Union relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council”. The Resolution “highlights the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation with the GCC on research and technology programmes” and “calls for the establishment of cooperation involving the transfer of technologies”.
Apart from this Resolution, many other initiatives and legislative actions that could have an impact on international cooperation activities are currently underway in the EU. Therefore this meeting is a very good opportunity to encourage a closer relationship between the EU and the Gulf region.
The meeting will include discussions with Prof Kenneth Wilson, Dr Husam Al Ulama (both United Arab Emirates National Research Foundation) and Dr Sehamuddin Galadari (Provost for Research, United Arab Emirates University) concerning the potential scope of R&D cooperation in health policy, while Prof Zatloukal (Medical University of Graz) will address R&D cooperation in the biological and medical sciences, with a particular focus on the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI) and IT Future of Medicine (ITFoM) pilot project as examples of potential cooperation.
