UN CSTD Inter-Sessional Panel in Manila, Philippines
The Inter-Sessional Panel will address two priority themes:
• “Innovation, research, technology transfer for mutual advantage, entrepreneurship and collaborative development in the information society”, which is related to the Commission´s mandate to assist the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC )in the follow-up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society; and
• “Open access, virtual science libraries, geospatial analysis and other complementary ICT and science, technology, engineering and mathematics assets to address development issues, with particular attention to education”, related to the Commission´s mandate on science and technology.
The UN CSTD is a subsidiary body of ECOSOC. It was established in 1992 as a result of the restructuring and revitalization of the United Nations in the economic, social and related fields. The Commission provides the General Assembly and ECOSOC with high-level advice on relevant issues. Through analysis and policy recommendations it enables those organs to guide the future work of the United Nations, develop common policies and agree on appropriate actions.
The Commission acts as an important forum for the examination of science and technology questions and their implications for development; the advancement of understanding on science and technology policies, particularly with respect to developing countries; and the formulation of recommendations and guidelines on science and technology matters within the United Nations system.
