During the last decades, population shrinkage has become a normal pathway for many European cities. In the future, it is likely that Europe will have to deal with the consequences of the depopulation of its urban regions. Given this context, the European Union through its 7 Framework Programme funded the project Shrink Smart – The Governance of Shrinkage within a European Context, a comparative study of 10 European shrinking cities that are coping with its consequences: Liverpool, Genoa, Leipzig and Halle, Sosnowiec and Bytom, Ostrava, Timisoara and Donetsk and Makiivka. During the workshop, the researchers involved in the project will present their key results and recommendations on how to deal with it effectively on the European level.
