An international conference entitled "Sustainable development of urban environment: an encounter of science, culture and innovation" will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on 27 May 1999.

Organised by the University Consortium Tyrrhenum, the Office of the Scientific Attaché of the Italian Embassy in Brussels and the National Scientific Research Fund of the Belgian French-speaking Community, and held under the framework of the Italy/Belgium Bilateral Protocol for scientific and technological cooperation, this event will focus on:

- Sustainable city planning and rational resource management;
- Protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage;
- Development and demonstration of technologies for safe, economic, clean, effective and sustainable preservation, construction, recovery, renovation, dismantling and demolition of the built environment, in particular for large groups of buildings;
- Comparative assessment and cost-effective implementation of strategies for sustainable transport systems in an urban environment.

The meeting will also seek to stimulate the building of targeted multidisciplinary partnerships answering to the demands and criteria of European sponsored actions, particularly those foreseen under the Key Action "The City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" of the Fifth Framework thematic programme "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development".
