The third international symposium on EU research in reactor safety (FISA 99) will be held in Luxembourg from 29 November to 1 December 1999. The symposium is being organised by the European Commission to review the conclusion of the shared cost and concerted actions which were funded under the Fourth Euratom Framework Programme (1994 to 1998) in the area of 'Nuclear Fission Safety/reactor safety and innovative systems.

The event will be devoted to the presentation of the final results and main achievements from this programme, obtained from 67 different research projects. These projects are organised in seven clusters, each devoted to one main issue of the work programme. One cluster deals with the ageing problems of irradiated materials, four other clusters focus on the phenomenology of severe accidents, and another is dedicated to the development of appropriate measures for managing accidents. The seventh cluster investigates innovative systems, and concentrates particularly on the removal of heat produced during radioactive decay.

Jean-François Marchipont, one of the Directors of the Preserving the Ecosystem programme (Directorate D.II) within DG XII (Science, research and development), will open the symposium with a lecture. This will be followed by a series of four invited plenary lectures about reactor safety and performance issues of generic interest for present and future light water reactors (LWRs) in the European Union.
