Europe Meets to Discuss Progress in Energy Research and Development

The Second European Energy Conference (E2C), which opened today in Maastricht, The Netherlands, brings together high-level researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss the future of European Energy. Experts from all sectors of energy will share their ideas on how to make the European energy system sustainable in terms of environmental and climate impact and also in terms of supply, industrial viability and societal acceptance.
Plenary speakers like Javier Solana, President of ESADE Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics, Bernard Bigot, French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) chairman, Mark Dierikx from the Dutch Ministry for Economic Affairs and Steven Koonin, Science and Technology Policy Institute, USA, will introduce themes ranging from system aspects and sustainability, sciences for energy, energy conversion, networks and energy storage, and efficient energy use.
Under the patronage of European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, the four-day conference serves as an open forum for the energy research and technology community and is organised by the European Science Foundation, the European Materials Research Society and the European Physical Society.
The conference aims to contribute to the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) of the European Commission and EU Member States, namely by identifying research needs for new technologies as well as discussing the systemic changes involved.
