Conference on « Democracy - the World Future? » in Brussels, Belgium
D.C.P. will thus help pave the way for the recreation of a “common good” and ultimately democracy.
By reactivating democracy, D.C.P. aims to contribute concrete, pragmatic, coherent, sustainable and embedded responses as part of a long term vision highlighting the “prospective” of major contemporary issues, challenges facing our planet and societies, the key preoccupations of public and socio-economic actors, and civil society as a whole.
Motivations: D.C.P. Conference entitled “Democracy - the world’s future? aims to address the risks, uncertainties and challenges, which define the current and future situation at European and global level:
severity of the financial and economic situation and related issues about economic development patterns, which strives to ensure stability, welfare, social cohesion, eradication of poverty;
scarcity of resources, environmental and climate degradation leading necessarily to achieve sustainable development;
high impact of technological revolutions forcing us to rethink the meaning of development in order to achieve a reconciliation between planet and its inhabitants;
global geopolitical changes refocusing our attention on the ability of the main form of government found in our societies – democracy – to cope successfully with present and future challenges.
Purpose: in relation to these strategic challenges, the Conference "Democracy, the world's future? " intends to discuss such a core exploratory hypothesis "Developing Democracy, an indispensable key to the economy, society and planet, from which everyone can benefit” "and to provide some possible answers.
Conference's works: the conference will be held in collaboration with renowned speakers with wide-ranging expertise. The organisers intend to allow as much as time as possible for discussion.
After an introduction including an historical and prospective retrospective, three thematic session will structure the conference: democracy and capitalism; democracy and society ; democracy and planet. The conference's works will provide answers, as far as possible, to a major concrete preoccupation: « In which direction and how can we develop democracy? Which tools could be reinforced, created or conceived in order to achieve this aim? ».
The Conference « Democracy - the world's future ? » is placed « under the patronage of Mr Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council ».
