Biotechnology in the global economy
The conference will address the implications of biotechnology for:
- International trade;
- Intellectual property rights;
- Biodiversity prospecting;
- Developing countries;
- Human and environmental safety;
- Social values.
Emphasis will be placed on the relationships between biotechnology and institutional change around the world. It will build on the premise that maximising the benefits of biotechnology and minimising its risks will require adjustments in existing institutions. In addition, the conference will stress that the design of technological systems needs to take into account social expectations.
The conference will bring together researchers, entrepreneurs, political leaders, policy-makers, and practitioners. The outcome of discussions at the conference will be used to formulate research agendas, guide further policy discussions and contribute to the shaping of training and educational material on biotechnology and public policy.
