Best practice in project management
According to the organisers of this event, there is general agreement on the benefits of participating in collaborative projects, such as benefiting from complementary experience, solving common competitiveness problems and improved individual organisations' R&D gearing. However, the difficulties involved are often under-estimated.
Difficulties may arise due to:
- The lack of availability of a sound and realistic consortium agreement at the onset of the project as a valuable insurance policy against possible conflicts;
- The lack of a clear and detailed action plan, which has the unanimous support and commitment of the partners, as an important factor to the success of the collaboration beyond the funding period;
- The lack of an appropriate project management structure, which should reflect the commitment and shared responsibility of all partners and offer practical guidelines for conflict resolution;
- The lack of appreciation of the difficulties associated with different languages and different cultural background;
- The lack of understanding of the need to develop a clear vision and realistic project goals and objectives which should be reviewed at regular intervals.
The workshop, which is being organised by the European Commission, DG XIII, will provide a forum in which issues like those outlined above will be discussed and the sharing of best practices encouraged.
