The key event of Europe's maritime year kicks off in Southampton, United Kingdom, on 23 June 1999, with the tenth plenary session of the Maritime Industries Forum.

The European Commissioners for Industrial Affairs and Transport, Martin Bangemann and Neil Kinnock, will attend, along with an expected 200 participants - from ship-owners and builders to maritime equipment manufacturers and small craft sailors.

In addition to industry representatives, delegates from the governments of Member States of the European Union and EFTA, and representatives from the European Commission and Parliament are also expected. The panel will receive reports on short sea shipping, maritime resources, ship financing, research and development, and human resources.

Key topics that will be addressed include the crisis in shipbuilding in Korea, and issues relating to the significance of the maritime industry to the EU economy.
