The interactive European network for industrial crops and their applications (IENICA) has announced a first call for papers for an international seminar on 'Speciality chemicals for the 21st century' in Valbonne, France, on 16 and 17 September 1999. Participants in the event will concentrate on intermediary products, medicinal applications, cosmetics and perfumes.

The seminar is intended to give an overview of the opportunities available from speciality crops, such as those used for industrial products other than food. Presentations at the seminar will therefore focus on research, development, production and processing of such products with higher added value. Particular attention will be paid to the application of new technologies and biotechnology to the molecular components of plants. IENICA's aim is to identify the needs and requirements of industry, end-users and consumers.

Invited papers will be published after the seminar as a special issue of 'Industrial Crops and Products', by Elsevier Science. There will also be an opportunity for companies and organisations to display their products at the event.

The seminar is supported by the European Commission's FAIR research programme (agriculture and fisheries, including agro-industry, food technologies, forestry, aquaculture and rural development), which was part of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme.
