Young scientists are being given the chance to participate in an international forum for managing the marine environment, in a conference taking place in Gillelje, Denmark, from 22 to 24 November 1999.

Most young scientists have limited access to international meetings and conferences, and therefore little possibility for participation in international scientific activities.

This conference, organised by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), and sponsored by the European Commission under the MAST programme, the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, is intended to give young scientists the opportunity to contribute to international scientific work, and to get involved in research networks at an early stage in their careers.

Recent trends in marine ecosystem research will be the focus of the conference, in particular;

- Human influence on marine ecosystems;
- Top-down or bottom-up control in marine processes;
- Influence of hydrographic processes on energy transfer in the planktonic ecosystem;
- Modelling ecological processes.
