Confidentiality, security and trust are crucial for companies doing business over the Internet. ISSE99 is the first Europe-wide conference to promote awareness of these issues and also their solutions, seeking to build a common consensus on how they can be addressed. Supported by the European Commission and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the conference will be held in Berlin from 4 to 6 October 1999, and is set to become an annual event.

The conference will focus on the use of cryptographic technologies - the keys that protect sensitive information on the Internet - exploring the potential for new business opportunities and examining the alternatives offered by European developers.

Programme manager Ulrike Schulte said: 'IT security is currently one of the most pressing questions for businesses. There are more and more instructions going via the Internet, and the information needs to be secure to ensure the safety of the data.

'For example agreeing a contract would be much simpler on the Internet, but you have to be sure that not everybody has access to the contract, that nobody makes changes to it, and that the person who signs it is who they say they are.

'Awareness of the security needs and appropriate technologies is low, particularly among SMEs where there is a real need for a forum to discuss the issues and available solutions.

'In addition there is a great divergence and fragmentation in the methods used and adopted within Europe, which causes confusion. It is no good for business partners to be operating on incompatible systems, and Europe needs to move towards adopting a common approach.'

The conference will draw high level speakers from across Europe, including Commissioner Martin Bangemann who will give the welcoming speech, and the keynote address will be delivered by Werner Mueller, the German Minister for Economics and Technology.

Everything from existing solutions and infrastructure, to applications, legal conditions and political requirements will be covered at the conference. Where possible the presentations will point to real experience of the European electronic business community, with the aim of increasing awareness for all enterprises - small, medium and large.
