A congress marking the 20th anniversary of the centre for research on computing and the law (CRID) will be held in Namur, Belgium, between 8 and 10 November 1999.

The conference, which will be addressed by representatives from the European Commission, intends to open debate on the legal stakes that underlie today's development of - increasingly widespread - new technologies.

It aims 'to bring together the friends of CRID', an organisation formed 20 years ago to carry out research in the field of information and communications technologies from legal, technical and socio-economic perspectives.

Two workshops on Monday 8 November will deal with the responsibility of Internet intermediaries and universal service. The following two days will be made up of plenary sessions and four working groups, ending with a discussion of conceptual considerations and recommendations.
