An environment of legal certainty is required for the continued development of electronic commerce in Europe. A conference organised by the Centre for Consumer Law of the Université Catholique de Louvain will look at issues of electronic consent, and takes place in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, on 23 and 24 September 1999.

The European Commission has recently adopted a proposal for a directive on electronic commerce, which builds on the recent Directive on distance-selling. The conference will look at existing regulatory environments in several European countries, before looking at the key legal issues in electronic commerce. These include:

- Establishing consent:
- - information and advertising of conditions;
- - physical contracts in electronic commerce;
- - legal protection for consumers;
- - separation in electronic consent;

- Proving and executing contracts:
- - signature and electronic payments;
- - technological evolution of validation systems;
- - sociological implications of giving consent electronically;
- - authentication of consent: legal experience.
