International conference on the peaceful uses of outer space
There have only been two UN conferences dedicated to the peaceful uses of space since 1968, and this year's event presents a rare opportunity to exchange ideas on the direction of space activities, establish professional networks and explore commercial opportunities.
The conference plenary will adopt the Vienna Declaration on Space and Human Development, an international policy framework to guide governments and industries in the first half of the 21st century.
A space festival for young people between the ages of 8 and 18, and a technical forum dealing with technical presentations relating to the agenda of the conference will run parallel to the main event.
The European Space Agency, ESA, the largest contributor to the UN Space Applications programme, has ensured a strong European presence throughout the conference. ESA has co-ordinated three of the 40 workshops, on the subjects of satellite navigation, disaster management and intellectual property and space activities.
The event will also feature appearances from ESA astronauts and Mr Antonio Rodota, ESA's Director-General who will address the audience at the plenary session on 20 July. The ESA stand will host a series of demonstrations on themes relating to the conference, in particular satellite communications and earth observation data exchange and their applications.
