A workshop organised in Brussels on November 14th will focus on available instruments to support investment in radio astronomy infrastructures in Africa of interest to Europe. Infrastructure investments are a crucial factor for the future of radio astronomy on both continents. . Further, the workshop will explore opportunities for technology development including scientific instrumentation for radio astronomy and the possibilities for African and European partners to collaborate on these.

Research infrastructures are a crucial factor for science capacity building and thus socio-economic development on the African continent. Africa is also well placed to host research infrastructures, especially for radio astronomy, which can benefit European science. A good example in this regard, which has raised significant excitement in Europe, is the proposed African VLBI Network. The workshop will also explore the opportunities and funding instruments for Africa-EU cooperation with regard to technology development including scientific instrumentation for radio astronomy. In the evening, a dinner will provide an ideal framework for informal engagement between policy-makers and stakeholders.

This workshop is one in a series of planned AERAP events, responding to the call of the European Union to strengthen African-European Research Partnerships in the field of Radio Astronomy, following the adoption of Written Declaration 45/2011 on “Science Capacity Building in Africa: promoting European-African Radio Astronomy Partnerships” on 15th of March 2012. AERAP is an initiative in close consultation with the sponsors of the Written Declaration 45/2011, MEPs Miguel Angel Martinez, Filip Kaczmarek, Fiona Hall, Judith Sargentini and Teresa Riera Madurell.

Editor’s Notes

The African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) is a response to the calls of the European Parliament, through the adoption of the Written Declaration 45/2011, and of the Heads of State of the African Union, through their decision “Assembly/AU/Dec.407 CXVIII”, for radio astronomy to be a priority focus area for Africa—EU cooperation. AERAP is a new stakeholder forum of industry, academia and the public sector established to define and implement priorities for radio astronomy cooperation between Africa and Europe. The overall goals of the platform are to leverage radio astronomy, advance scientific discovery, improve knowledge transfer and stimulate competitiveness across both continents. The platform will also enable effective dialogue to build a shared vision for international cooperation in radio astronomy.
