BRUSSELS — MEP Britta Thomson will host a seminar in the European Parliament on November 15th, 2012 to launch the European Parliament’s African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) Group as well as present the AERAP’s progress so far.

The African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) will report to the European Parliament on its activities and achievements over the past few months. This report will be completed with special testimonial interventions on successful African-European radio astronomy partnerships. The outcomes of the various AERAP stakeholder workshops conducted over the past few months, will be presented focusing on cooperation related to human capital development and renewable energy solutions. Within this context AERAP stakeholders and Members of the European Parliament will discuss future cooperation activities and needs of the African and European radio astronomy communities. In conclusion, Members of the European Parliament will announce the launch of their AERAP Group.

Furthermore, for European stakeholders interested, AERAP can also arrange bilateral meetings with Members of the European Parliament representing stakeholders’ constituencies in their home countries. Editor’s Notes

The African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP) is a response to the calls of the European Parliament, through the adoption of the Written Declaration 45/2011, and of the Heads of State of the African Union, through their decision “Assembly/AU/Dec.407 CXVIII”, for radio astronomy to be a priority focus area for Africa—EU cooperation. AERAP is a new stakeholder forum of industry, academia and the public sector established to define and implement priorities for radio astronomy cooperation between Africa and Europe. The overall goals of the platform are to leverage radio astronomy, advance scientific discovery, improve knowledge transfer and stimulate competitiveness across both continents. The platform will also enable effective dialogue to build a shared vision for international cooperation in radio astronomy.
