FOCUS FINAL SYMPOSIUM in Krems, Austria

You are cordially invited to attend the Final Symposium of the EU Security Research project known as FOCUS (“Foresight Security Scenarios – Mapping Research to a Comprehensive Approach to Exogenous EU Roles”), held at Danube University in Krems, Austria.

Co-funded under the Security Research theme of the EU’s 7th EU Framework Programme, this new two-year project (April 2011 - March 2013) has aimed wide but with concrete policy guidance in mind: namely to define the most plausible threat scenarios that affect the “borderline” between the EU’s external and internal dimensions to security – and derive guidance on the Union’s future possible security roles and decisions to plan research in support of those roles.

FOCUS elaborated a set of scenarios, based on IT-supported foresight, ranging from natural and man-made disasters to terrorism and malicious attacks on Europe’s critical infrastructures. Along with its IT-based Knowledge Platform, two of the project’s main deliverables are the creation of a long-term prediction and assessment tool at EU level and a roadmap to plan and prioritize future Security Research objectives.

The main purpose of the Final Symposium is to share gained insight for long-term planning of European security research, in the 2035 time frame, that is reaching beyond Horizon 2020. FOCUS reference scenarios and a draft roadmap proposal with underlying analysis will be presented and discussed, including statements from external experts and stakeholders. In addition, opportunity to work on finalization of main FOCUS output for future security research planning will be provided on the 2nd day of the symposium, in parallel workshops.

There will also be an outlook panel on planning for Horizon 2020, with participation of the European Commission.
