The GEIXS project will demonstrate its results at two User Workshops, to be held in Brussels on 13 and 14 October 1999, and in Budapest on 2 and 3 December 1999. GEIXS (the geological electronic information exchange system) is supported by the Esprit programme under the EU's Fourth Framework Programme (1994-98). It is scheduled for release as a public facility in December 1999.

GEIXS is a pan-European Internet-based system designed to improve the access of decision-makers, planners and researchers to the vast amounts of environmental and natural resource information stored in specialist databases across Europe. Eighteen organisations have collaborated on the project to provide a public-access one-stop shop of interlinked on-line information, catalogues and indexes. A pan-European GIS base and a multilingual keyword index enable searches to be made in any of the eleven official EU languages.

GEIXS was recently extended to a number of Central and Eastern European countries and part of Russia. Further extensions are planned.

According to the workshop organisers, GEIXS is relevant to any organisation or individual needing to save search time or to archive large data such as:

- Insurance companies, property managers;
- Health authorities;
- Local, municipal and regional governments;
- Environmental agencies;
- Water industry;
- Construction and civil engineering industries;
- Overseas development agencies;
- Heritage organisations;
- Waste disposal engineers;
- Schools and universities;
- Minerals and hydrocarbons industries.

The two workshops are intended to introduce GEIXS to a wide range of new users and future partners to help to develop the style even further. The project team will demonstrate GEIXS capabilities and discuss technical aspects, standards and all other points of interest to users.
