The European Safeguards Research and Development Association (ESARDA) will hold its 15th Symposium on "Safeguards and Nuclear Material Management" in the Vatican City, Rome, 11-13 May 1993.

ESARDA is an association of European organizations, including Member State nuclear energy authorities and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), formed to advance and harmonize research and development of safeguards. The association also provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between nuclear facility operators and safeguarding authorities.

The three-day Symposium will comprise oral presentations from international authorities and general contributions from specialists in the safeguards field (morning sessions) plus afternoon technical sessions presented in parallel in separate rooms (room B being English-only without translation). Poster sessions will take place throughout the day, and proceedings will be published immediately after the Symposium, including the full papers of both poster and oral presentations.

An opening session on 11 May will be followed by:

- Day 1: Invited papers; challenges and trends in modern safeguards; plant-specific experience I & II; measurement techniques I & II (NDA).

- Day 2: IAEA session; safeguards in highly automated plants using advanced techniques; material control and accountancy; data evaluation technology; measurement techniques III & IV (NDA).

- Day 3: Safeguard concepts and national programmes I & II; containment and surveillance I & II; measurement techniques V (general) & VI (DA)

The third day will terminate with a closing session and summing up of the Symposium.
