Strategies for developing industrial biotechnology
Currently the best known fields in biotechnology are health and agro-food, but with ever-growing concern for environmental sustainability and clean industrial processing, industrial biotechnology is becoming more prominent. Meeting these concerns will require consistent innovation, based on all areas of science and technology, and biotechnology will play an important role. Besides the developments in recent years in industries such as pharmaceuticals due to biotechnology, other applications such as enzymes have been developed and are widely used in pulp, paper and textile products. Another example of recent biotechnological development is in the crossover from fields such as microelectronics, micro-mechanics and computer science, promising a range of new industrial development tools.
The conference will address issues relating to innovation, and the uptake of modern biotechnological applications in industry. It will also identify technical, funding and patent bottlenecks. In particular, it will examine the roles of government, public and private sectors in the quest for new business development - i.e. technologically innovative new companies.
