The third European Commission conference on 'Research for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the European Cultural Heritage: opportunities for Eurpopean enterprises', will be held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on 23 and 24 September 1999.

The conference, supported by the European Commission, DG XII, aims to promote European cultural heritage within the Key Action on 'the city of tomorrow and cultural heritage', part of the Fifth Framework Programme.

There will be a focus on the themes of improved damage assessments on cultural heritage, developing innovative conservation strategies and fostering the integration of cultural heritage in the urban setting.

European industrial participation, particularly of SMEs, will be actively encouraged to develop and assess technologies for cultural heritage. Furthermore it is hoped to raise awareness and increase involvement among national and local administrations and public and private organisations concerned with cultural heritage.

By promoting research, cooperation and technology transfer among enterprises, research institutes and end-users, it is hoped European citizens will feel the socio-economic benefits.
