Final Conference of the EU REPLACE Project, Paris, France

On April 15 and 16, 2013, the REPLACES Project - a research project funded in the frame of the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission, focused on the identification of molecular and biological mechanisms underlying plasticity and repair in Parkinson's disease - will organize its Final Conference, which will take place in Paris, France.

15 April 2013 - 16 April 2013
Austria
The Conference has been organized by the REPLACES Coordinator, Prof. Monica Di Luca from the Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences, University of Milan, Italy, and by Dr. Etienne Hirsch, Director of National Institute for Neuroscience, Cognitive Sciences, Neurology and Psychiatry, France and partner of the Consortium. The European Parkinson’s Disease Association (EPDA) also gave a great contribution to the realization of this conference especially thanks to its links and expertise in the patients’ associations environment.

Thanks to its two-days programme, the Conference will celebrate the conclusion of the project activities and communicate the successful results deriving from it, both to a scientific audience and, most importantly, to patients and their representative associations.

On April 15th, the Principal Investigators of the REPLACES Consortium will have the occasion to present to the scientific community the innovations that the REPLACES activities brought to the current state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, which are linked to:
- the development of a novel cellular model and in vivo animal models of Parkinson’s disease, allowing to reproduce pathological aspects associated with the very early stages of the disease and therefore to test diverse restoring approaches.
- a complete molecular characterization of the basal ganglia circuitry, which is instrumental for the identification of critical molecular targets involved in Parkinson’s disease, which is opening new perspective in the development of new therapeutic strategies.
- The development of new pharmacological approaches able to prevent and/or reduce the onset of L-DOPA induced dyskinesia.

On April 16th, thanks to the presence of John Bowis former Minister of Health in UK and member of European parliament, the Conference will be the occasion to open a debate on the prospects of Parkinson’s disease research and the societal challenges that Europe has to face in respect to this condition, which is one of the most common chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease, with 1.2 million people currently affected in Europe. During this session, patients, patients’ associations and a lay audience are invited to participate.
