The EurOCEAN 2000 conference will follow a technical theme based on EU research activities in the field of marine science and ocean technology, and will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from 29 August to 2 September 2000.

The conference will focus on bringing research providers together with intermediate and end users in order to improve the mechanisms of research and technology transfer into the applied domain.

It will be divided into a series of parallel and plenary sessions, during which topics covering the priority fields of the European Union's Fifth Framework Programme will be discussed.

This approach should help with discussions of the relevant issues of research implementation, and to improve the interfacing of natural science, socio-economics and policy, say the conference organisers from the European Commission's DG XII. It should also help to identify the areas where European research should concentrate in the next decade.

In addition to the conference meetings, participants will have the opportunity to spend a day visiting industrial companies and small and medium-sized enterprises in the region that are active in the maritime sector.

The conference will also be linked with EXPO 2000 at Wilhelmshaven ('EXPO at the sea') and the main site in Hannover, which will be themed 'Humankind, nature, technology - a whole new world', emphasising the integration of environment, society and research.
