SOCIOEC Project Hosts Special Session at the European Association of Fisheries Economists Conference

The SOCIOEC project organised a special session at the 21st European Association of Fisheries Economists (EAFE) conference, held in Edinburgh from 15-17 April 2013.

15 May 2013
Austria
Six speakers presented the current status of the SOCIOEC project and its main results, methodologies and objectives. The session was entitled, SOCIOEC: Socio-economic Assessment of Management Measures on the New Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) - First Results and Upcoming Research and the speakers were Ralf Dӧring (SOCIOEC coordinator, Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries - Thünen-SF), Leyre Goti (Thünen-SF); Mike Fitzpatrick (National University of Ireland, Galway - NUIG); Stephen Hynes (NUIG); Raul Prellezo (AZTI-Tecnalia); and Peder Andersen (University of Copenhagen - UCPH).

Leyre Goti, SOCIOEC project officer, said: “This is the only EAFE conference that will take place during the lifetime of the project, as EAFE holds conferences and workshops in alternate years. The conference is more open to a broad range of stakeholders than the workshops, and we have had the chance to involve not only scientists and industry and management representatives, but also EC representatives, NGOs and consultancy firms.”

EAFE is an independent association of economists working in fisheries, including catching, aquaculture and on-shore sectors in Europe. The objectives of EAFE are to promote cooperation in economic research in fisheries and aquaculture; to assist in the dissemination of information about fisheries economics among members, to undertake any activity deemed appropriate to further the understanding of fisheries economics and to serve as a channel of communication with other interested bodies.

Ralf Dӧring, the SOCIOEC project coordinator and chairman of the session, was very happy with the outcome: “The session went smoothly with good presentations and the opportunity to have a very fruitful discussion with the audience.”

SOCIOEC is an interdisciplinary project bringing fisheries economists, social scientists and biologists together with industrial partners and other key stakeholders. It will develop potential new future measures to be introduced in order to achieve a more profitable and efficient fishing sector that provides sustainable employment, supports society’s aims, and contributes to societal well being.

Note for Editors

The Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries (Thünen-SF), Germany, is coordinating the SOCIOEC project. AquaTT is the project dissemination partner. SOCIOEC is funded by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n°289192.

(ii) Clarifying the Overarching Principles of the CFP – First Results of SOCIOEC (Leyre Goti)
(iii) Methodological Background of Analysing the Incentive Structures of Fisheries Management Measures (Leyre Goti on behalf of Birgit de Vos)
(iv) A Choice Experiment of Fishermen’s Preferences for Future Management Options within the CFP (Mike Fitzpatrick)
(v) Modelling the Impact on Spatial Choice of Fishing Ground Closures in the Celtic Sea on Irish Demersal Otter Trawlers: A Random Parameters Logit Site Choice Using VMS Data (Stephen Hynes)
