European sustainability policy goes under the microscope
The high level conference will be held in advance of the December Helsinki European Summit, at which EU Heads of State or Government will review Europe's progress towards sustainable development and the integration of environmental issues into other policy areas.
More than 200 senior EU and national level policy-makers, business leaders and non-governmental organisations (NGO) representatives from all over Europe will be able to communicate their opinions at the event. Their independent assessment of the EU's record on sustainable development will then be submitted to the Helsinki Summit.
The event will examine how sustainability principles and targets have been implemented across Europe. Participants will focus on how markets can be transformed to incorporate sustainable practices and will develop benchmarks for measuring the success of new EU initiatives. Participants will also focus on how integration policies and strategies for the next decade should be formulated.
Sustainability 21 is being organised by the European consultative forum on the environment and sustainable development in cooperation with the European Environmental Advisory Councils.
