The picturesque town of Brugge in Belgium hosts the XVIIth European symposium on science and culture, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the College of Europe, on 30 September and 1 October 1999.

Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission and the President of the Board of Directors of the College, will formally open the event, which focuses this year on the 'knowledge society'. Participants will discuss the implications of the European social model of the evolving knowledge society, its new parameters, requirements and prospects.

The European symposia on science and culture were initiated by Jacques Delors in 1992 when he was President of the European Commission. They are organised by the Commission's Forward Studies Unit in cooperation with other Commission services (this year the Education and Culture Directorate-General) and with local partners (universities, municipalities, regional governments and other institutions). The objective is to provide a forum for debate with Commission representatives on the questions and problems arising in a continuously changing society.
