An open forum on metadata registries is scheduled to be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, from 17 to 21 January 2000. It is the fourth in a series of international conferences on the topic.

Participants from both the public and private sectors will have the opportunity to explore the capabilities, uses, content, development and operation of metadata registries, particularly those based on ISO/IEC 11179. Emphasis will be placed on managing the content (semantics) of data that is shared within and between organisations or disseminated via the Internet.

Ongoing metadata registry efforts will be discussed with tracks that describe metadata management activities in the fields of healthcare, environmental protection, statistics and demographics, transportation, aeronautics and space, geographic information, electronic commerce and emerging technologies.

Presentations will range from the use of metadata registries for data standardisation and documentation to advanced uses, including a demonstration of Intelligent Information Services.
