A workshop on 'Detection of buried material, including land mines', jointly organised by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and CEN/STAR (an R&D group of the European Committee for Standardisation), will take place in Ispra, Italy from 3 to 5 November 1999.

The workshop will identify in particular the areas where standards are needed, and provide the kick-off for launching these new standardisation activities on the basis of recent research and new technology. It is hoped that once broad techniques for the detection of buried material have been standardised, safer, faster and more cost-effective techniques will become available, in particular for the detection of land mines, the quality assurance in mine clearance and the verification of compliance with the Ottawa Treaty.
